The Maldives Swimming and Life Saving Skills Training School (MSLSTS), in collaboration with Patina Maldives, Fari Islands, has launched a forward-looking youth development initiative designed to create a structured pathway for young Maldivians into professional lifeguarding and aquatic safety operations.
Commencing in 2026, the programme specifically supports young people who have completed their GCE O-Level examinations and are awaiting higher education, exploring career opportunities, or seeking meaningful employment and professional experience.
Recognising this important transition period in a young person’s life, MSLSTS and Patina Maldives have established an opportunity for participants to use their time productively by undertaking professional lifeguard training combined with practical operational experience.
The programme goes beyond conventional classroom-based training. Participants are introduced to the realities of professional lifeguard operations, developing essential competencies in water safety, surveillance, prevention, rescue response, emergency procedures, communication, teamwork, operational discipline and professional conduct.
To date, six young participants have successfully undertaken training through the initiative, establishing the foundation for a programme that is intended to grow sustainably in the years ahead.
A Strong Industry–Training Partnership
A defining feature of the initiative is the active engagement of the Safety First Department and Lifeguard Operations at Patina Maldives, Fari Islands. Their involvement enables young participants to experience professional safety practices within a world-class hospitality environment while developing an understanding of the standards and responsibilities expected of operational lifeguards.
Particular recognition is extended to Director of Security, Shifau, for his strong commitment to youth development, professional training and operational alignment. His active support in strengthening the connection between training and real-world lifeguard operations demonstrates the value of leadership in developing a strong and sustainable safety culture.

Creating a Sustainable Career Pathway
The initiative represents more than a short-term training programme. It is intended to establish a sustainable development pathway connecting education, professional skills and operational experience.
Through this approach, young people can develop valuable competencies during the period between secondary education and their next stage of life—whether that is higher education, employment or a longer-term career in lifeguarding and aquatic safety.
The programme also contributes to the wider development of the Maldives’ water safety workforce by encouraging young people to view lifeguarding not simply as a temporary job, but as a professional discipline requiring knowledge, skill, responsibility and continuous development.
An Opportunity for the Next Generation
For young Maldivians who have recently completed their GCE O-Level education, this initiative provides a valuable opportunity to gain professional training, practical experience, confidence and workplace exposure while preparing for their future.
MSLSTS welcomes young people who are interested in developing themselves through professional lifeguard training and operational experience to learn more about future programme opportunities.
The objective is simple: develop capable young people today, create professional lifesaving opportunities tomorrow, and contribute to a safer Maldives for generations to come.
