The Maldives Swimming and Life Saving Skills Training School proudly commemorates its 17th Anniversary, marking seventeen years since its establishment on 9 August 2009 and reaffirming its enduring commitment to advancing water safety, lifesaving education, professional competency and community resilience.
Over seventeen years, the School has developed its work across lifeguarding, water rescue, swimming, first aid, emergency first response, aquatic safety, professional lifesaving development and community water-safety education. Its purpose remains firmly centred on strengthening preparedness and developing the knowledge and practical capability required to protect human life in aquatic environments.
Seventeen Years of Service and Professional Engagement
Throughout its journey, the Maldives Swimming and Life Saving Skills Training School has worked with a wide range of leading resorts and hospitality organisations across the Maldives, supporting the development of professional lifesaving capability and stronger aquatic-safety practices.

These partnerships represent an important part of the School’s contribution to the Maldivian tourism industry, where beaches, lagoons, swimming pools and marine activities form an integral part of the guest experience.
The School’s professional programmes have increasingly incorporated practical rescue training, scenario-based exercises, emergency simulations, surveillance, risk recognition, first response and competency-based assessment, with the objective of strengthening operational readiness rather than relying solely on theoretical knowledge.
International Recognition by the World Health Organization
The contribution of the Maldives Swimming and Life Saving Skills Training School to water-safety development is also formally recognised in the World Health Organization’s South-East Asia Regional Status Report on Drowning 2025. In the Maldives country policy brief, under “Existing interventions,” the report specifically identifies the Maldives Swimming and Life Saving Skills Training School as a private entity providing “lifeguard and water rescue training on a demand-driven basis.”
This reference places the School’s work within the wider regional landscape of drowning prevention and water-safety initiatives and represents an important independent recognition of its role in developing lifesaving and water-rescue capacity in the Maldives.

Developing Safer Communities
While professional training within the tourism sector remains an important part of the School’s work, its contribution extends beyond resorts.
The School has increasingly supported local councils, communities, institutions and organisations seeking to strengthen water-rescue capability and emergency preparedness.
In 2026, the School collaborated with the Secretariat of R. Alifushi Council to deliver a comprehensive programme combining Water Rescue Training, Lifeguard Training and Emergency First Response, strengthening local capacity to recognise aquatic risks and respond effectively during emergencies.
This reflects a broader principle at the heart of modern drowning prevention: water safety is a shared responsibility. Professional lifeguards are essential, but safer communities also depend upon public awareness, trained responders, effective emergency systems and organisations committed to prevention.
Strengthening Lifesaving Leadership
The School’s contribution extends beyond technical training.
Through its Life Saving Leadership Awards, the Maldives Swimming and Life Saving Skills Training School recognises individuals, teams and organisations demonstrating excellence in water safety, lifesaving operations, emergency preparedness, aquatic risk management and professional leadership.
The 3rd Life Saving Leadership Awards Ceremony 2026, held in Malé on 17 May 2026, brought together senior officials, resort executives, lifesaving professionals, operational leaders and emergency-response personnel to recognise outstanding contributions to water safety and lifesaving leadership.
The initiative reflects the School’s belief that professional excellence should not only be developed, but also recognised, celebrated and used to inspire higher standards across the industry.
