Through a collaborative initiative between the Maldives Swimming and Life Saving Skills Training School and the Secretariat of the R. Alifushi Council, community members strengthened their capacity in water rescue, lifeguarding, and emergency first response, demonstrating the transformative impact of investing in lifesaving education and preparedness.

“The ability to save a life is one of the most valuable skills a person can possess” When these skills are shared across an entire community, they become a powerful force for resilience, preparedness, and public safety.
With this vision in mind, the Maldives Swimming and Life Saving Skills Training School (MSLSTS), in collaboration with the Secretariat of the R. Alifushi Council, successfully conducted a comprehensive Water Rescue Training, Lifeguard Training, and Emergency First Response (EFR) Programme in R. Alifushi from 1 June to 8 June 2026.
Throughout the eight-day programme, participants engaged in intensive theoretical and practical sessions designed to strengthen lifesaving competencies, enhance emergency response capabilities, and foster a culture of prevention and preparedness within the community. Regular updates shared through the official Maldives Swimming and Life Saving Skills Training School Facebook page highlighted the participants’ dedication, the practical learning experiences, and the strong support extended by the people of R. Alifushi.

More than a training programme, this initiative represented a meaningful investment in people empowering community members with the confidence and practical skills required to respond effectively when lives are at risk.
Programme Outcomes:
The initiative achieved outstanding results, contributing significantly to the enhancement of local emergency response capacity.
Emergency First Response (EFR):
A total of 57 participants successfully achieved Emergency First Response certification, gaining essential knowledge and practical competencies in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and emergency care.
Lifeguard and Water Rescue Training:
The programme enrolled 34 participants in specialised aquatic safety programmes, comprising:
21 participants in Lifeguard Training
13 participants in Water Rescue Training
Lifeguard Certification Achievements:

7 female participants successfully achieved lifeguard certification.
Lifeguard Badge Holders:

These achievements represent far more than successful examination outcomes. They reflect the development of a stronger and more prepared community equipped with individuals capable of responding effectively during emergencies and contributing to a safer environment for everyone.

Hospitality That Left a Lasting Impression:
While the programme outcomes were exceptional, one of the most memorable aspects of the initiative was the extraordinary hospitality extended by the people of R. Alifushi.
The Secretariat of the R. Alifushi Council, the Women’s Development Committee (WDC), and the wider community provided unwavering support throughout the duration of the programme. Their generosity, kindness, and commitment created an environment that fostered learning, collaboration, and mutual respect.
Words alone cannot adequately express the gratitude felt by the training team for the warmth and hospitality demonstrated by the people of R. Alifushi. Their support transformed this initiative into a truly meaningful partnership built upon shared values and a collective commitment to protecting lives.
The Power of Community Preparedness:
The experience of R. Alifushi demonstrates how communities can proactively invest in preparedness, strengthen local capacity, and foster a culture where safety and shared responsibility become community values.
By empowering local residents with lifesaving knowledge and practical rescue competencies, communities are better positioned to prevent emergencies, respond effectively to incidents, and support one another during times of need.
As island communities continue to seek innovative ways to enhance public safety and resilience, initiatives such as these illustrate the far-reaching impact of community-based lifesaving education. Beyond the immediate training outcomes, they cultivate leadership, promote volunteerism, empower individuals, and contribute to the development of safer communities.
The success of this programme reinforces an important message: prepared communities save lives.
Looking Ahead:
The Maldives Swimming and Life Saving Skills Training School extends its sincere appreciation to the Secretariat of the R. Alifushi Council, the Women’s Development Committee, community leaders, participants, volunteers, and every resident whose contribution made this initiative possible.
The true legacy of this programme will not be measured solely by the certificates awarded or badges presented. It will be reflected in the confidence gained by participants, the resilience strengthened within the community, and the lives that may one day be protected because individuals chose to prepare before an emergency occurred.
Communities interested in enhancing water safety, emergency preparedness, community resilience, and lifesaving capacity are encouraged to explore partnership opportunities with the Maldives Swimming and Life Saving Skills Training School to develop programmes tailored to their unique needs and aspirations.
Because investing in lifesaving education is more than delivering training—it is about empowering people, strengthening communities, and creating a safer future for generations to come.
